A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

Info:

Made in 77 hours and 49minutes for LOWREZJAM 2020.

https://itch.io/jam/lowrezjam-2020

The game is limited to a resolution of 64x64 as per the rules.

There was no theme but I went with some of the suggested ones like:

You Are The Weapon - "professional" gun user.

Infiltration - your mission is to infiltrate a castle.

You Are Terrifying - press "C" when the bar fills up. ;)

Timelapse + Gameplay:

Jam Comments:

I always try to create a game during a jam like this without looking anything up on the internet or anything like that and I almost managed to do it.

I unfortunately had to look up two things from my own previous code after attempting them for hours, these were:

1. Smoothing out the collisions, I made some mistakes here and they're still far from perfect even after looking at my old code a bit.

2. I forgot a small part of projecting shadows (a simple one liner) so I had to go look at my old code for this as well.

I also used my own mastering preset for the music / sound effects but all melodies and sound effects were created during the jam as well as all graphics.

Overall, the game turned out better than expected.

Feel free to leave any feedback!

Description:

This is a fairly standard old school Doom / Quake style shooter where you play as an agent on a mission to infiltrate the enemy castle.

Features:

5 Levels + 1 bonus developer testing level.

6 Weapons. (one is shared with another)

5 Enemy types.

A bunch of different items. (ammo, armor, health, powerups, keys)

Secrets.

In-game stats like kills, items, time spent in level.

Controls:

WASD = Move.

Mouse = Look around.

Left Mouse Button = Shoot.

Right Mouse Button = Zoom.

Space = Jump.

E = Use.

C = "Special Power".

1-5 = Change Weapon.

R = Restart Level.

If you get stuck you can enable / disable god mode (invulnerability) by pressing "Home".

Notes on Linux:

The Linux version currently has all shaders disabled so it will not look the same as on windows.

It also has some mouse movement issues, at least using the touchpad on my laptop.

Overall the native Linux version is relatively untested (I basically just confirmed it runs), so it may be better to just run the Windows version with Wine or something.

(not tested but should probably work)

Fun! The low res kind of makes it really need a map.

The game feels very wolfenstein esque. Custom engine?

(+1)

Hey, glad you found it fun. ^^

Yeah, it would definitely benefit from having a map.. there's many other issues with this but since it was made for a game jam there's bound to be.

And I used GameMaker Studio 1.4 to make this.

would you be willing to share your source code? would love to check out how you did this, so i can try and recreate in my language

Hey, I'm sorry but I don't think I really feel like giving out the full source code for this, it was written super quickly since this game was made for a game jam and as such is not of very high quality, besides, I'm sure there's better things out there like tutorials which are specifically dedicated to this sort of game.

hey no problem, i just like poking around in code

i non stop restarting level ,because I'm used to reloading the magazine under r

(+2)

Hey, yeah that turned out to be kind of an issue.

But this game was just made for the game jam and won't be receiving any updates so it is what it is I guess.

Thanks for playing the game though. :)

ok

The Linux build didn’t run… So i downloaded the windows version and ran Wine. Otherwise great game.

(+1)

Sorry for the late reply.

Glad you got it working, I didn't exactly test the Linux version very much.

I just booted up Ubuntu and confirmed it runs and if you did everything in the readme.txt file then I don't know why it wouldn't work.

But it is what it is I guess, glad you liked the game though. :)

Great job on this -- amazing for a game jam! Just curious, what game engine/framework are you using? Or is it a custom one?

Hey, thanks.

It's made in Game Maker Studio 1.4, the entire creation process is recorded as a timelapse in the description above. ^^

that is no joke really impressive

I know what this is game maded for LowResJam, but huge pixels is prevent accurate shooting on long distance - hard see enemy front you in 1-2 pixels. I know about zoom, but while zoom hardly see other enemies and hard to avoid them. How i can disable that huge-pixel shader, maybe need add this option?

Enemies sometimes stuck in solid blocks, and they have not correct collider - need shoot with offset to left side to hit, if shoot in left shoulder - shots go through sprite without damage.
Monster by C button - is useless, by my practice, because have too slow punch animation.
Level 3 impossible deal without shotgun - when we collect pentagram, game create too many enemies to slay them with pistol.

Levels 3 and 4 need add checkpoints - is pretty big levels to start it from scratch after respawn.
Need add saving last level index in file, to start game from it after next launch.

BUG: After collect pistol in start level 3, is start firing slower. That fixed after restart level after duying.

Hey, so, I understand the game has some pretty big issues but there will be no updates for this as it was a jam game.

But here are some answers either way:

The game is actually being rendered at 64x64 so there's no shader for that going on, if it were an actual serious game project, there would be an option to turn this off.

Yes, I noticed some enemies getting stuck as well.

The hitbox is not very advanced and does not cover the sprite or anything like that, it's just a 2D top down box or circle, can't remember right now, but same answer here, these would be fixed if this was a real project.

The "C" button, did not turn out that useful except maybe if you have low life, so I mostly agree there.

There are multiple weapons available on Level 3, they are just hidden, but sure, there's probably too many enemies either way.

Yes, saving would be nice to have but it didn't make it in, once again, if this was a real project then I would 100% have saving of some sort.

And finally, as stated above, there won't be any changes made to this so the bug will have to stay.

Anyway, thanks for trying the game and the feedback, even if I won't change anything. :)

Hi, do you have an email I can privately contact you on regarding your game?

Hey, yep I do, it's listed in my twitter info: https://twitter.com/ApapappaGames

I pretty much only have it displayed there for anti spam purposes.

(not sure if it actually helps though)

I just tried a little but it's funny. In the genre I only played "project warlock" but i finished it almost twice, so this kind of games keep to be interesting today.

Thanks for playing. :)

I have not played "Project Warlock" myself so I can't really comment on that, but I can say that "Doom-likes" will always be interesting to me. :)

nice game man

Thanks. ;)

good game. even if i cant see anything, still a good game.

Thanks and yeah, that just comes with the resolution limit.

I tried alleviating it a bit with the zoom feature but it's probably not enough. :)

this game is great, and.... IS THAT LUIGI .O. why we need to kill luigi's do u work for nintendo .OOOO.

Thanks, it's supposed to be like a military man but I get it. :p

This game is amazing but with the time gets confusing

Thanks for playing. :)

And yeah, I know, it can get confusing at times because of the resolution, but that was the requirement for the game jam so it is what it is for now. ^^

(+1)

Yes Yes no problem! I know what's the jam about, but If you move looking directly at the screen It gets confusing. Really Good!

MAC ??

(+1)

I don't own a Mac so I can't do that unfortunately, sorry.

(+1)

R for restart - not the best idea to be honest xD
Else - it is AMAZING!!!!

Yeah restart should have been on another button further away from the movement keys, but it is what it is for now.

Thanks for playing and glad you like it. :)

(+1)

I have nothing to regret. Item´s bonuses and weapon´s damage were well in balance. Music and sounds fits well. I got nostalgic vibes. This reminds me of Doom, Serious Sam and Hexen. -oneak

Yep, I went for an old school Doom / Quake vibe, Quake is in there mostly because of the jumping + platforming.

Anyway, thanks for playing! :)

(+1)

Wow, very nice!

Thanks, glad you like it. :)

(+1)

nearsighted simulator :)

Yeah, that's just how it is with this low resolution. ;)

I probably wouldve chosen a fog effect or something, it can get really eyestraining at times, atleast for me personally

There is fog unless you played on the Linux version where all shaders are disabled.

The fog could probably have been a bit closer though so I understand. :)

(1 edit)

Im on windows and never saw any fog
update: Nevermind i see it, its just not close enough

Good to know it's there and works but yeah, the fog could definitely have been a bit closer.

(+1)

This is fun... and of course I also made the mistake of tapping the 'R' key in the worst possible moment! Eh... still fun. :)

(+1)

Thanks for playing, I left some comments on youtube. ^^

And yeah, the 'R' thing may be a bit of a problem but this is what I consider the final version for the jam so it is what it is for now.

(+1)

Please change the "R" restarts level thing.  I keep doing it thinking I am reloading my weapon :)  Otherwise 10/10!

(+1)

Thanks for trying the game, glad you like it. :)

I won't be doing any changes to this version until the jam is over, but I'm thinking about making this an actual side project, so if that happens, you can expect many changes. ^^

(+1)

pretty fun but it can be disorienting at times. all in all a pretty good game

Hey thanks for trying the game.

Yeah it can get disorienting, but that's probably only because of the low resolution which is required for the game jam this was made for. ^^
